July 26, 2008

The Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition in Sri Lanka has decided to call for public ideas and views for the proposed Patients Charter which will be formulated to protect patients’ rights and safety. Accordingly, proposals including views and ideas which the public believe should be included for the Patients Charter will be accepted by the committee appointed by the Ministry led by Dr. Wimal Jayantha.

The above decision has been taken by Healthcare and Nutrition Nimal Siripala De Silva after having a meeting organized to discuss some proposals of stakeholders representatives of Government and non- Governmental organizations and trade unions yesterday.

Minister Silva pointed out that while there are many organizations for professionals in the health sector, there are none that looks out for patients.

Minister Silva said that after receiving the views and ideas of the public they will be directed to the respective sub committee for further analysis and thereafter it will be submitted for the perusal of the Legal Draftsman and Attorney General and finally presented to Parliament as a Bill.

“I hope to finalize the entire process up to the Bill within two or three months,” Minister Silva stressed.
