Sri Lanka’s Poson Festival to be Celebrated With the Theme of Non-Violence

June 15, 2008

The Poson festival for this year is to be celebrated from 15th until the 21st of this month, in a grand scale to mark the advent of Arahat Mahinda Thera on Poson Poya Day with the message of Buddhism.

The main festival will be held in Raja Rata, centered round the Mihintale sacred area, Atamasthanaya and the Tantirimale Raja Maha Viharaya on the theme of non violence.

The police have made special arrangements to ensure the security of the devotees arriving to participate in Poson activities including religious observances.

Police had ordered the closure of all liquor shops, taverns and meat stalls in the Anuradhapura district during the Poson week from June 15 to 21.

Special bus and rail services will be operated for the convenience of pilgrims visiting the Raja Rata for Poson. Only vehicles with special permits will be allowed to enter the Anuradhapura sacred city, during this period.

The Police expect the full co-operation of the public in this regard.

The public have also been requested to desist from damaging archaeological monuments and lighting camp fires which would cause damage to such monuments and the environment.
