State Correctional Institution At Somerset, Pennsylvania Loses Power

September 17, 2008

Due to problems with its generators, the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Somerset, Pennsylvania, lost power today. The prison has also been experiencing telephone problems.

The problems with the generator began at noon during a regularly scheduled testing of the generator system and resulted in loss of power to the entire prison at 2 p.m.

Additional lighting has been provided to the prison, additional perimeter patrols have been assigned and officials are working to resolve the matter. However, it is possible that the prison will be without power for the next few days.

The public is not at risk, as inmates have been locked in their cells and will remain so until the prison’s power is restored. Inmates will be fed in their cells and will receive medical care in their cells.

Inmate visits have been suspended until further notice.
