More students in England will be able to take up careers in town planning and help bridge the skills gap after Planning Minister John Healey confirmed an additional £1.8m to fund student bursaries for post graduate training at 16 Universities.
The Government scheme began in 2004, with over 600 students completing their post-graduate planning qualification, and this year (2010/11) there is funding that will provide the full tuition fees for over 180 planning students as well as help them with the cost of living.
Students awarded bursaries are asked to agree to work for two of their first five years of employment after qualifying in the public sector.
John Healey said:
“We have reformed the planning system so it is faster, fairer and better at fulfilling its crucial role of delivering the homes this country needs and providing critical energy and transport infrastructure.
“But we also need a new generation of planners to make sure we are competitive in the global economy and meet the Government’s ambitious low carbon goals. That’s why I’m providing the full funding for over 180 students to complete high-level training so they have the right skills to raise standards in the public sector and shape future development in the UK.”
The 16 universities who offer RTPI accredited one year full time post graduate planning courses are:
Birmingham City University (formally UCE)
Leeds Metropolitan University
Liverpool John Moore’s University
London South Bank University
Oxford Brookes University
Sheffield Hallam University
University College, London
Kingston University
University of Liverpool
University of Manchester
University of Newcastle upon Tyne
University of Reading
University of Sheffield
University of the West of England at Bristol
