Sudan Breaks Diplomatic Ties with Chad, Declares State of Emergency

May 11, 2008

Following the break of diplomatic ties with Chad Saturday, Sudanese ministry of interior on Sunday announced a state of emergency and imposes an indefinite curfew in the capital, Khartoum following the alleged rebel attacks north of the capital.

The move will help the security forces to identify and crack down on the rebels who had overrun the western Khartoum suburb of Omdurman on Saturday, a statement said.

Sudanese security agents believe that some rebels are still hiding in the capital after they were repelled.

On Saturday, the combined Sudanese forces recaptured Omdurman after a fierce battle with the rebels leaving many civilians dead, according to unconfirmed reports.

The Ministry urges all citizens to stay indoors.

Meanwhile, Sudanese police Chief, Mohammed Najib has assured the citizens in the capital Khartoum that the rebel forces allegedly belonging to the Justice and Equality Movement of Khalil Ibrahim, a faction from Darfur, have been flushed out about 60 kilometers out of Omdurman.

Sudan has accused the Chadian government of supporting the Darfur rebels for Saturday’s attack.

Upon return from Saudi Arabia on Saturday, Sudanese president Omar Hassan Ahmed al-Bashir declared that had broken diplomatic ties with Chad over the attack.

Al-Bashir was in Saudi Arabia for a pilgrimage but had to cut it short due to the attack.

According to the Sudanese army, the Darfur rebels entered the town with about 50 vehicles and out of which 24 have been destroyed while many of the rebels have been captured.

But the army did not disclose the number of casualties on both sides.
