Sudanese Leader Fires Civil Aviation Chief After 3rd Air Crash in a Month

July 1, 2008

Sudan’s president Omar al-Bashir has issued a decree dismissing the Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Major Abu-Bakr Jaafar Ahmed after the cargo plane crash Monday, killing its four Russian crew members.
He immediately issued a decree appointing Ibrahim Abdullah Abdul-Karim to take over the post of Director General.

President Omar al-Bashir also issued another decree setting up an independent committee to investigate the causes of the recent plane crashes.

He directed the new Director General of the CAA to issue a stoppage on Antinov and Ution planes from working in all the airports in Sudan.

These decrees came after a cargo plane working for the Ababeel private aviation company crashed on Monday outside the Khartoum International Airport shortly after taking off for Juba, the Southern Sudanese capital.

This is the third fatal air crash in Sudan in the past one month. Earlier this month, an airliner of Sudan Airlines crash-landed in Khartoum airport, killing at least 30 people. Also last Saturday, another cargo plane crashed near the Southern Sudanese town of Malakal, killing at least seven people.
