Swarms of locusts are currently being reported in many areas in the Aoukar, Inchiri and Nouakchott regions in Mauritania, the director of the National anti- locust center (CNLCCP), Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Babah, revealed here.
Ould Babah explained on Monday at a sensitization meeting with development partners in Nouakchott that this year’s good rainfall favored the presence of these migratory locusts.
“The situation is however not alarming at present,” he said indicating that there are 16 ground-based teams with means allowing them to treat 3000 hectares per day in case of invasion from neighboring countries.
“We have no information on the locust situation in these countries and we believe this requires the use of aerial control operations,” he said.
The CNLCCP director added that the prospecting teams working on the ground since 20 September have already treated 600ha.
Mauritania, located on the front line between the Sahel and the Maghreb, is a crossing point of locust population due to climate conditions favorable to breeding and the rest of these predators in most parts of the year.
