4 Intimate Nights With Beyonce At New York’s Famed Roseland Ballroom

Beyonce will take the stage at New York’s famed Roseland Ballroom for four nights of special performances this month. The set on each night will be the entire collection of her critically acclaimed album, “4.”

For four special nights, August 14, 16, 18 and 19, Beyonce will perform her new songs to a standing room only audience.

Described by music critics as her most accomplished work yet, genre busting, bold and vibrant, “4″ is a platform for the star to stretch her musical tastes and showcase her pitch-perfect voice. “What matters to Beyonce is actually the music,” states NPR. And The New York Times calls her “relentlessly perfect.”

Citi is the official credit card of “4 Intimate Nights With Beyonce”. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning Wednesday, August 10 at Noon EDT through Citi’s Private Pass Program.

British Singer Adele Forced to Cancel Remaining 9 Dates of North American Tour Due to Illness

British singer Adele has been forced to cancel the remaining 9 dates of her sold-out North American tour due to ongoing illness.

Adele recently postponed 5 shows under doctor’s orders when she was diagnosed with laryngitis. While resting in Los Angeles, Adele met with an Otolaryngology specialist who determined it was imperative that she take the next few weeks to recover with absolute voice rest.

The 23 year old singer, renowned for her powerful live vocal performances, was intent on resuming her tour on June 4th in San Francisco, CA before learning of her advanced condition.

“I’m really frustrated. I was hoping with a weeks rest I’d be better to sing again straight away. However there is absolutely nothing I can do but take the doctors advice and rest some more. I’m so sorry. See you soon, love Adele”

Plans to reschedule these cancelled tour dates are being investigated; more information will be provided when available.

Beyonce was a performer at the Answer The Call concert at Madison Square Garden on September 11, 2009, which also benefited New York Police & Fire Widows’ & Children’s Benefit Fund.

Native Trout Fare Best When Dams Use Natural Stream Flow Management Practices

Natural stream flow suits native trout populations best, according to a new study that is the first to examine the impacts of dam operations on threatened freshwater trout. The study appears in River Research and Applications.

In a study to identify the potential impacts of Hungry Horse Dam (Montana) operations on declining native trout populations, scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey, Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc., Spatial Sciences & Imaging and Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks examined how changes in river flow affect fish habitat on the upper Flathead River in Montana.

“Our research suggests past flow management practices created sporadic flow fluctuations that were likely detrimental to threatened bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout populations in the upper Columbia River Basin,” said Clint Muhlfeld, project leader and USGS scientist. “With Montana providing 40 percent of the U.S. water storage in the Columbia Basin Power and Flood Control system, water demands –and biological impacts—are significant.”

Populations of native bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout have declined throughout ranges in western North America due to a many factors, including habitat destruction, fragmentation and non-native species. Dam operations in the Columbia River Basin have contributed to these declines by changing flow and habitat, and disrupting routes of fish migration.

Loss of habitat connectivity and habitat modification can be especially detrimental to native trout populations, the study found. These fish migrate to spawn and feed and prefer large, relatively pristine habitats that are connected without any barriers such as dams.? Although the upper Flathead River system in Montana and British Columbia, Canada, is considered a regional and range-wide stronghold for bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout these populations may be threatened by the effects of 55 years of altering flow downstream of the Hungry Horse Dam.

Results of the study further suggest that dam management strategies that are more similar to the natural flow of the river will likely improve the chances of protecting habitat and help to maintain and restore bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout populations.?

“Analyses comparing the natural flow of the mainstem Flathead River (predam, 1929–1952) with five postdam flow management strategies (1953–2008) show that natural flow conditions optimize the threatened bull trout habitats and that the current management practices best resemble the natural flow conditions of all postdam periods,” Muhlfeld said.?

One caveat to this observation, said Muhlfeld, is the practice of increasing flow in the late summer to help fish species such as salmon and steelhead, known as “anadromous” because they migrate from salt water to fresh water to breed.? According to the study, increasing flow to benefit one species is actually reducing the amount of suitable habitat for another – the bull trout, a species listed as a threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

“Several studies have shown that dam operations have profound effects on anadromous fishes, yet before ours, few studies have examined the impacts of flow management strategies on habitats of threatened, native trout species in the upper Columbia River Basin,” Muhlfeld said.

Results from the study are featured in the April 2011 early online edition of River Research and Applications.? The article is titled “Assessing the impacts of river regulation on native bull trout (salvelinus confluentus) and westslope cutthroat trout (oncorhynchus clarki lewisi) habitats in the Upper Flathead River, Montana, USA” and can be viewed online.

Footloose Glaciers Crack Up

Glaciers that lose their footing on the seafloor and begin floating behave very erratically, according to a new study to be published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. Floating glaciers produce larger icebergs than their grounded cousins and do so at unpredictable intervals.

This study presents the first detailed observation of the transition from grounded to floating glaciers, which is currently ongoing at Columbia Glacier, one of Alaska’s many tidewater glaciers. Tidewater glaciers flow directly into the ocean, ending at a cliff in the sea, where icebergs are formed. Prior to this study, Alaskan tidewater glaciers were believed to be exclusively “grounded” (resting on the ocean floor), and unable to float without disintegrating.

However, Columbia Glacier unexpectedly developed a floating extension in 2007 that has endured far longer than researchers expected. The research team believes that this floating section may have been caused by the speed at which the glacier is receding, according to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) glaciologist Shad O’Neel, who coauthored the study. Columbia is one of the fastest receding glaciers in the world, having retreated 4 km (2.49 mi) since 2004, and nearly 20 km (12.43 mi) since 1980.

According to University of California at San Diego glaciologist Fabian Walter, who led the study, the transition from grounded to floating ice will play an important role in a larger effort to understand and include calving in large-scale glacier models, which are essential in producing accurate forecasts of sea-level rise. The research team conducted their study on Columbia Glacier by installing a seismometer, a sensor that measures seismic waves that are produced by shifts in geologic formations, including earthquakes, landslides, and glacier calving. They studied the results from 2004-2005 and 2008-2009, which allowed them to compare the glacier’s activity before and after it became floating.

The formation of icebergs, through a process known as “calving,” is a leading source of additional water for the global ocean basin. As this study confirms, grounded glaciers and floating glaciers often show fundamentally different calving mechanics. However, iceberg calving is also one of the least understood processes involved in ice mass loss and consequential sea level rise. The study, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, sheds light on the process by comparing the size and frequency of icebergs calved by a glacier during both floating and grounded conditions.

Calving occurs when fractures in the ice join up and cause a piece of ice to completely separate from the main glacier to form an iceberg. Unlike the floating glaciers, grounded glaciers calve icebergs nearly continuously, but they are generally quite small.

Through this study, scientists can begin to analyze the mechanics of the calving process in glaciers (both floating and grounded) and ice shelves, which will allow them to better understand and predict iceberg production from glaciers and ice sheets. These predictions, in turn, will provide a more accurate estimate of sea-level rise in the coming years.
