Chile Calls Home Ambassador to Peru Over Maritime Dispute

Chile has recalled its ambassador to Peru for consultations about a growing dispute over the countries’ maritime border. Foreign Minister Alejandro Foxley says Ambassador Cristian Barros has been called home to discuss the issue. He did not elaborate.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has rejected Peru’s claim to an area of the Pacific Ocean near their common border. Ms. Bachelet said Monday that treaties signed in 1952 and 1954 clearly define the area as Chilean territory.
