The Moroccan king Mohammed VI has called for polls to elect a new legislature in a bid to appoint the head of the government from the majority as provided for by the new Constitution, and hence form a new government from a parliamentary majority that is homogeneous and stands together.

The King was speaking on the Feast of the throne, which commemorates his enthronement on July 30 1999.

In his speech, which comes a month after the population voted in (98%) a new Constitution, Mohammed VI said that these reforms should encourage the emergence of a new and healthy political and institutional landscape, that is worthy of the Constitution and can “prevent repeating faults and problems that are affecting the current political landscape.”

The Moroccan people realized their great ambition which is to reach ”a new democratic era,” said Mohammed VI.

However, he stressed that “the great challenge that lies ahead is the qualification and mobilization of all stakeholders, so that this Constitution becomes a reality, and a daily practice that reflects the democratization of the State and society at a time, while opening up huge promising prospects of a free and dignified life, especially for our young people and poorer strata.”

The Moroccan monarch warned that ”any delay may jeopardize the dynamics of trust and squander the opportunities offered by the new reform in terms of development to create the conditions for a decent life for our valiant people.”

The former king, King Gyanendra has been given two weeks to leave his palace. Authorities say that he will be forced out if he fails to leave during that period of time.

The Nepalese president, Girija Prasad, also commented on the move. “Today is the day when my dreams have been realized and similarly the dreams of the nation have perhaps also been realized,” he said.

Ban Ki-moon , the Secretary General of the United Nations said that by supporting the switch to a republic, the Nepalese people have “clearly spoken for peace and change.”

Voters in the tiny Himalayan nation of Bhutan go to the polls Monday for elections that will complete the nation’s transformation from monarchy to a democracy.

They will be electing members of the 47-seat lower house of parliament, known as the National Assembly. Most members of the 20-member upper house were elected in a January vote.

The two main parties vying for seats are both led by men close to the king, and analysts say they are ideologically similar. Both party leaders have already served terms as prime minister, and one of them, Sangay Ngedup, is a member of the royal family.

Bhutan’s 28-year-old King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck is leading the campaign for democracy started by his father nearly two decades ago.

Under the new constitution, the king will become head of state.

Security has been tightened for the polls following a series of small bomb blasts this year blamed on rebel groups.

Election officials also are concerned about making sure people in remote areas can get to polling stations.
