Dibakar Banerjee’s much talked-about Sex Love Aur Dhokha went before the censor board yesterday. The controversial love scene showing a bare-backed girl on top of a man, making love, is to be blurred on screen.

In other words, Dibakar’s couple will be seen by the audience making love as two blurred figures.

The director, already miffed and mired in what he sees as unnecessary controversy, refuses to be enraged even if so many recent Hindi films have had graphic love- making scenes. As for the female bare back during a love-making scene, the censors liberally allowed that in Rensil d’Silva’s Kurbaan just recently!

Says Dibakar, “We had submitted a DVD of the film to the Censor Board so they’d recommend cuts in advance and avoid delays. The censor preview recommendation suggests that we blur the sex scene. We were told this scene was too graphic and needed tempering. There’s no way the censors could allow the love-making scene. We’ve clearly been told that even before the film is submitted for censoring.”

When asked how bare-backed love-making scenes have been allowed by the censors recently and how the one in Love Sex Aur Dhokha has been asked to tone down even before the film is submitted to the censors, the director chooses to smile mysteriously.

“I’ve been, in principle, against the film being perceived as a voyeur’s delight. Love Sex Aur Dhokha is not about sex sex and sex. Those who expect that will turn away disappointed.”

However, in another more radical cut, all reference to caste in a love story between a low-caste boy and a high-caste girl has been removed by the Censor Board. This has infuriated Dibakar. Says the director, “This completely changes the perspective of my story since now the caste-challenged love story is turned into a poor-boy-rich-girl romance. This is not what I intended.”

Also, the song ‘Tu Nangi Acchhi Lagti Hai’, which was modified on the audio cd to ‘Tu Gandi Achchi Lagti Hai’, has now been similarly modified in the film also.

Says Dibakar, “But no complaints. Considering the controversial content, my film got away easily with little cuts and an ‘Adults’ certificate.”

Mack Gordon Harris Sr., 67, of Social Circle, Ga., has pleaded guilty to transporting a minor for illegal sexual activity.

Harris was indicted by a federal grand jury in Richmond, Va., on July 21, 2009. According to court documents, in June 2005, Harris began communicating with a Maryland girl, then 15, through a Christian online chat room. As they continued chatting during the next few months, Harris admitted that at times he suggested they engage in sexual intercourse; exposed himself on a computer webcam; urged her to send naked pictures; and engaged in “phone sex.”

Harris eventually visited the girl around the time that she turned 16, which is the age of consent in Maryland. Harris admitted that several times during his visit and after the girl’s sixteenth birthday, the two engaged in sexual intercourse.

Shortly afterward, Harris and the girl decided that he would take her to live with him in Georgia. Harris admitted that he instructed the girl to pack her belongings and leave farewell notes for her family. According to court documents, Harris picked up the girl in Maryland in December 2005 and began driving her to his home in Georgia. Harris admitted he told the girl that while traveling, she was not to speak with anybody, but if asked her age, she should respond that she was 25. During the journey, they stopped overnight at a hotel in Skippers, Va., where the age of consent is 18, and engaged in sexual intercourse.

Harris faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and a lifetime of supervised release. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 24, 2010.

The case is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney Barak Cohen of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth C. Wu of the Eastern District of Virginia. The case is being investigated by U.S. Postal Inspection Service and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Many studies have shown that media images of female models have had a negative impact on how woman view their own bodies, but does this same effect hold true when men view male models? A leading researcher of media effects on body image at the University of Missouri looked at the effect of male magazines on college-age men.

Completing three different studies, Jennifer Aubrey, assistant professor of communication in the College of Arts and Science, found that unlike their female classmates, it was not the same-sex models that affected the males negatively, but quite the opposite.

In her research, which will be published in Human Communication Research, Aubrey found that the cultural expectation for men is not that they have to be as attractive as their peers, but that they need to be attractive enough to be sexually appealing to women.

In her first study, Aubrey measured male exposure to ‘lad’ magazines, such as Maxim, FHM and Stuff, which she observes contains two main messages: the visual, which mostly contain sexually suggestive images of women; and textual, which contain articles that speak in a bawdy, male voice about topics including fashion, sex, technology and pop culture. Aubrey also measured male body self-consciousness (a participant’s awareness and tendency to monitor one’s appearance) and appearance anxiety (the anticipation of threatening stimuli). Participants were asked questions such as “During the day, I think about how I look,” and then asked the same questions a year later.

“We found that reading lad magazines was related to having body self-consciousness a year later,” said Aubrey. “This was surprising because if you look at the cover of these magazines, they are mainly images of women. We wondered why magazines that were dominated by sexual images of women were having an effect of men’s feelings about their own bodies.”

To help answer this question, Aubrey collaborated with University of California-Davis Assistant Professor Laramie Taylor. The researchers divided male study participants into three groups. Group one examined layouts from lad magazines that featured objectified women along with a brief description of their appearances. The second group viewed layouts about male fashion, featuring fit and well-dressed male models. The final group inspected appearance-neutral layouts that featured topics including technology and film trivia.

“Men who viewed the layouts of objectified females reported more body self-consciousness than the other two groups,” Aubrey said. “Even more surprising was that the male fashion group reported the least amount of body self-consciousness among the three groups.”

Aubrey speculated that the exposure to objectified females increased self-consciousness because men are reminded that in order to be sexually or romantically involved with a woman of similar attractiveness, they need to conform to strict appearance standards.

To test her theory, Aubrey and Taylor completed a third study that involved breaking men into two groups. Group one received lad magazine layouts of sexually idealized females and group two received the same layouts with average-looking ‘boyfriends’ added to the photos, with captions about how the female models are attracted to the average-looking men.

“We found that the men who view the ads with the average-looking boyfriend in the picture reported less body self-consciousness than the men who saw the ads with just the model,” Aubrey said. “When the men felt that the model in the ad liked average-looking guys, it took the pressure off of them and made them less self-conscious about their own bodies.”

The Mauritian ministry of Education is setting up a structure in order to tract pedophile teachers in schools following a huge scandal recently where a pupil has accused an inspector of primary schools of having been sexually aggressive towards him many times.

The structure will not only be a preventive and curative one, but will at the same time have a psychologist who will “draw up the profile” of a pedophile which will help the staff of schools to recognize such persons.

The General Purpose Teachers Union (GPTU), one of the stakeholders in the setting up of the structure, on Tuesday handed over to Education Minister Vasant Bunwaree the names of two other paedophile teachers which the union declares are still working in schools.

Meanwhile, the State Law Office has been directed by the government to set up a list of all those persons who have been accused of having had sexual intercourse with children.

Out of this list, the Police will make a selection and establish a second list of those who have several times been condemned for pedophile activities.

A Police officer who requested anonymity declared to APA that the second list will be so long that it will “attest to the fact that the Mauritian society is really ill”.

“Eye watchers” will be used to ensure that those on the second list are not left alone with small children.

At the same time, the State Law Office is exploring the possibility of introducing electronic tags to monitor the whereabouts of habitual sexual offenders.

More than half (52%) of brides-to-be expect that their sex lives will improve after walking down the aisle, according to a new survey from Brides.com, Conde Nast’s destination bridal Web site. Before that walk, however, more than a third (37%) admit to fantasizing about “another man” when in bed with their fiance. A good number (76%) also say that their sex life has either simply stayed the same or worsened since they got engaged.

Poll results additionally indicate that new brides agree that the wedding night and honeymoon warrant something special in the boudoir. Nearly a quarter (24%) said that they plan on purchasing a sex toy for the occasion and an overwhelming majority (95%) plans on buying new lingerie.

In order to make the wedding night sex even more memorable, most brides (92%) plan to sleep in separate beds the evening before their nuptials, with many (42%) intending to halt sexual activity well before they head to the altar. Of those planning a bedroom hiatus, a majority (53%) expects to abstain for a month or longer.

In addition, there is a percentage for whom the wedding night will not require anything new to spice up the bedroom, with more than one in ten (11%) respondents stating that they want to say “I do” before having sex for the first time.

Methodology:

The poll results contained in this release are non-scientific and are based on questions posted on Brides.com from June 18 – 30, 2008. A total of 2206 women answered the online questions.

More results include:

Respondents gave positive explanations for why they’ve stayed married, with 71% choosing “deep love” as a reason and 73% citing “companionship.” Close to 30% admitted they remain married either because of financial reasons or because “it’s too much trouble to get out.”

Three-quarters of respondents reported that their sex lives were reasonably fulfilling, while 25% said sex was only on the “tolerable” to “terrible” end of the spectrum. When it comes to frequency, 31% said they are having sex less than once a month, but 27% answered “at least a few times a week.”

Sixty percent of men said they don’t have sex enough, a feeling shared by 51% of women. Reasons why Americans do not have sex more often: Nearly half of the men said it was because their spouse wasn’t interested, compared with 21% of women. A quarter of the women said they had lost sexual interest in their husbands or often were angry with them – or both.

As far as fidelity goes, men admitted to straying more than women. Nearly a quarter of the men said they’d had sex outside of marriage or refused to answer the question, while only 15% of the women admitted to cheating or avoided the question.

Of the respondents who cheated, the men did so with more partners. Sixty-one percent said they’d had sex with two or more people other than their spouse, and 14% reported having sex with five or more other partners. Most of the unfaithful wives – 55% – had sex with only one person outside their marriage.

Sixty-three percent said they’d try to save their marriage if a spouse was unfaithful; 26% would consider divorce. Nine percent would leave immediately. Thirty-eight percent have occasionally thought of leaving their spouses.

A new study found that trained sexologists could infer a woman’s history of vaginal orgasm by observing the way she walks. The study is published in the September 2008 issue of The Journal of Sexual Medicine, the official journal of the International Society for Sexual Medicine and the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health.

Led by Stuart Brody of the University of the West of Scotland in collaboration with colleagues in Belgium, the study involved 16 female Belgian university students. Subjects completed a questionnaire on their sexual behavior and were then videotaped from a distance while walking in a public place. The videotapes were rated by two professors of sexology and two research assistants trained in the functional-sexological approach to sexology, who were not aware of the women’s orgasmic history.

The results showed that the appropriately trained sexologists were able to correctly infer vaginal orgasm through watching the way the women walked over 80 percent of the time. Further analysis revealed that the sum of stride length and vertebral rotation was greater for the vaginally orgasmic women. “This could reflect the free, unblocked energetic flow from the legs through the pelvis to the spine,” the authors note.

There are several plausible explanations for the results shown by this study. One possibility is that a woman’s anatomical features may predispose her to greater or lesser tendency to experience vaginal orgasm. According to Brody, “Blocked pelvic muscles, which might be associated with psychosexual impairments, could both impair vaginal orgasmic response and gait.” In addition, vaginally orgasmic women may feel more confident about their sexuality, which might be reflected in their gait. “Such confidence might also be related to the relationship(s) that a woman has had, given the finding that specifically penile-vaginal orgasm is associated with indices of better relationship quality,” the authors state. Research has linked vaginal orgasm to better mental health.

The study provides some support for assumptions of a link between muscle blocks and sexual function, according to the authors. They conclude that it may lend credibility to the idea of incorporating training in movement, breathing and muscle patterns into the treatment of sexual dysfunction.

“Women with orgasmic dysfunction should be treated in a multi-disciplinary manner” says Irwin Goldstein, Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Sexual Medicine.”Although small, this study highlights the potential for multiple therapies such as expressive arts therapy incorporating movement and physical therapy focusing on the pelvic floor.”

Idris is a pimp and makes no bones about it. Because of the way the sex industry works in Nigeria’s northern city of Kano, he and the women he pimps have a co-dependent relationship – they exploit each other. Kano’s history dates back 1,400 years as an iron-working center that adopted Islam in the 14th century and grew on the back of the trans-Saharan caravan trade.

Outside the old city walls is a quarter known as the sabon gari, where “foreigners” traditionally lived, segregated from the Hausa-speaking indigenous population. With sharia law applicable in Kano, it is in the bars and hotels of the sabon gari – where Islamic jurisprudence does not reach – that Idris does his business.

He works with a group of Hausa-speaking women from all over the north who live in a dingy, nameless hole-in-the-wall hotel, whose anonymity seems deliberate. Quarrelsome, poor, with some clearly on something narcotic, these are women at the edge of society.

As they prepared for the evening, applying henna to their hands and feet, cleaning their rooms, getting stoned, Idris explained that his role was to guide the “big fish” to the establishment, and sometimes act as muscle. He gets tipped by the women, maybe gets fed if they feel sorry for him, or he has a girlfriend among them, but the money they make is theirs alone.

It is not that much. They pay N450 (US$4) a night for the rooms and share blocked toilets downstairs, having to burn incense to cover the smell, and charge around N300 (US$2.60) for sex – an amount whispered out of earshot of Idris and the other pimps. While a “big fish” in the capital, Abuja, or the commercial metropolis, Lagos, might shell out N150,000 (US$1,300), here a serious score would be N15,000 (US$130) – and it doesn’t happen often.

“There is a religious/cultural dimension; they are outcasts from their families and find succour in drugs: ruffies [Rohypnol, a date-rape drug], Benzedrine [an amphetamine], cough syrup,” explained Salamatu Da’u, behaviour change communication coordinator in Kano of the Society for Family Health (SFH), a Nigerian AIDS service organization that had just begun working at the hotel.

Kano, Nigeria’s second largest city, has an HIV prevalence rate of 3.4 percent – just below the national average of 4.4 percent – but among brothel-based sex workers it hits 49.1 percent. In a six-state behavioral survey by the federal ministry of health, Kano’s brothel-based sex workers were the least able to correctly identify ways of preventing HIV transmission, and the least likely to use condoms with their customers.

The stories of the women working out of the brothel in the sabon gari were almost identical: divorced, or running away before being forced into marriage, hoping one day to find somebody to settle down with. “I come from a religious family and I know what I am doing is a sin, but I pray every day for God to create an opportunity for me to leave this business; not just me, but all the girls,” said Fatima Danjuma*.

Married young

In the north, the pressure on girls to get married begins almost as soon as they start menstruating, said Da’u. “Ï grew up with it. The idea is sold to you from six or eight; it’s a way of life. The girls see it as a rite of passage: ‘soon I’ll be on my own’, independent, grown up.” But the sacrifice is education, and the chance of real independence that it can deliver.

According to the Population Council, an international reproductive health organization, 45 percent of girls in northern Nigeria are married by the age of 15, and 73 percent by age 18. The “vast majority” of child marriages are arranged by families, to husbands 12 years older than their wives on average.

“Men made the vast majority of decisions in the household, regarding not only major life issues such as large purchases, but also more mundane matters such as daily purchases and meals. Sexual debut was often unwanted and traumatic for these young brides,” the Population Council’s website noted.

The vulnerability of the girls is magnified by the high divorce rate in Kano, a commercial city where a new bride can be a status symbol for a man. “A girl can be married at 12 and divorced at 18, with children to support,” said Da’u. “The way you change a car is the way you change a wife in Kano. You give birth to a few children and you can find yourself divorced for the slightest excuse.”

That creates a class of young women who are likely to have limited schooling, possibly living at home again – with all the tension that entails after running their own household – and expected to earn an income. Typically, this means petty trading on the streets, selling food, cosmetics or small items, while waiting for suitors; but it can also shade into sex work, in a region where condom use is exceptionally low.

“The north is a very traditional place; to make inroads you must work with traditional religious leaders,” said Kene Eruchalu, SFH’s national head of behavior change communication. “What we don’t have yet is many traditional leaders coming out to promote condoms. A number of them have come to terms with the fact that people are having sex, and we’re thankful that we’ve had some kind of silent support which hasn’t opposed the intervention.”

Sheikh Zachery Adam says he is “deeply involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS” and, through a local association that meets one a month, supports the use of condoms for men who cannot abstain from sex or remain faithful to their wives. “I don’t jump to conclusions, only God will judge who goes to hell or heaven,” he told IRIN/PlusNews.

Kamalu Ibrahim, head of the local Koranic school, politely waited until the sheikh had left the room before offering his opinion. “Islamic laws are rigid, no matter the situation. There can be no sexual intercourse unless you are married; [rather than using condoms] the only solution [to sexual urges] is to marry young.”
