“Currently, 56 vehicles are imprisoned by the snow on the highway near the village of Vostochnoye [in Skhalin's central Makarovsky district]. Fourteen women and children have been rescued from them,” a spokeswoman for the head of the regional Emergency Situations Ministry told RIA Novosti.

“Emergency Situations Ministry staff delivered food and fuel to the car owners. Food stocks in the village of Vostochnoye are sufficient for seven days,” she said, adding that accommodation had been provided at a local school and a small barbecue joint was laying on food.

The storm system struck the island on Thursday, with the heaviest snowfall occurring on Friday. More than 30 specialist vehicles were being used to clear the snow, but were only able to advance about 5 kilometers (3 miles) an hour.

The snow also blocked a rail line, with an avalanche engulfing a diesel locomotive and snowplow. Two railroad workers were missing, with rescuers forced to work carefully due to the threat of further avalanches.

More than 300 rail workers, along with as many as 200 soldiers, were working to clear the line and restore rail service.

Nissan’s Russian division has launched the production of X-Trail crossover sport utility vehicles at its facility in Russia’s second largest city.

“Today we have started assembly of the Nissan X-Trail. This is one of the company’s bestsellers and it will no doubt attract demand,” said Tatyana Natarova, a spokeswoman for Nissan Motor Rus.

Natarova declined to specify the output plan or the price of X-Trail cars to be assembled in Russia, saying the company’s plans would depend on economic indicators at the moment of decision-making.

Nissan’s St. Petersburg facility, which was opened on June 2, 2009, had until now produced only Nissan Teana business-class cars.

Nissan announced plans to open an assembly line near Russia’s second city in April 2006, and construction was formally started at a groundbreaking ceremony in July 2007.

The plant is expected to produce 50,000 cars a year once it reaches its designed capacity. Investment in the project has totaled $200 million.

Attendees at the Climate Camp ‘09 have focused on pollution in local water supply caused by the expansion of the Metropolitan Colliery in Helensburgh, on NSW’s south coast.

Beginning the Camp on Friday with a banner drop over Woronora dam stating “Water Not Coal,” the group looked to draw attention to the fact that Woronora water – one of Sydney’s most reliable drinking sources – is threatened by a Government decision to approve a $50 million expansion of the Metropolitan Collieries.

The green light for expansion will allow longwall mining to take place directly underneath the Woronora dam, say the group.

“While we are faced with increasing drought and population it is insane to keep damaging the city’s precious water resources. It’s ridiculous. We can’t drink coal.” says Caroline Graham, of environmental alliance Rivers SOS in a statement.

Climate Camp Spokesperson, Jess Miller said that Climate Camp ‘09 was about highlighting the Government’s decision to promote coal over water supplies.

“Climate Camp 09 is about ensuring that a healthy, clean and safe life is guaranteed for our kids and communities and we fully support Rivers SOS,” she said.

However Peabody Energy, the U.S-based company which owns the Metropolitan Colliery, told Australian Associated Press (AAP) that the expansion of the colliery would have not significantly affect the local environment.

“Substantial scientific evidence supports the fact we have negligible impact on the reservoir and the rivulet,” spokeswoman Jennifer Morgans told AAP.

“Third party assessments found the mining will have no significant impact on quality or quantity of water.”

Organised protests at the Climate Camp include sustainable living, workshops and festivities, according to the group’s news release, which will culminate on Sunday with a peaceful demonstration against the expansion of the mine.

“When it comes to water, climate and jobs, our actions will speak louder than their words,” said Jess Miller.

For further details on Climate Camp ‘09, please see website here.

The organization has been designed to combat harassment and a negative public image.

“It has been statistically established that mothers-in-law are unnecessarily maligned and subjected to judgmental attitudes by society,” Daily News and Analysis quoted AIMPF coordinator Neena Dhulia as saying.

According to the founders, daughters-in-law often use anti-abuse laws to harass their mothers-in-law.

“Many women are accused and dragged to court by their daughters-in-law. So we are focusing only on them. The organization is not against anyone; it is for mothers-in-law,” a spokeswoman for the forum said.

The organization will seek amendments to the inheritance and dowry prohibition laws and the Domestic Violence Act to give mothers-in-law more protection from false accusations made by their sons’ wives.

The founders say the situation is made worse by the negative public image of mothers-in-law, and their complaints are often rejected by the National Commission for Women.

“In TV dramas, we are the villains; in real life, we are the victims,” one of the group said.

France-Info radio has reported that Michelin workers in eastern France refused to allow four managers to leave their factory on Tuesday night amid tensions over job-losses and restructuring.

The lock in was sparked by the treatment of a worker who refused to use machinery he had not been trained to operate.

More than 50 Michelin workers in Montceau-les-Mines locked up the managers, including the director of the factory, and damaged the company’s administrative building.

“We had warned our management. We do not want this [job-losses]!” union spokesman Patrick Duvert said.

The company’s executives were released on Wednesday morning, after regional officials offered to mediate, a Michelin spokeswoman said.

Earlier on Tuesday, two managers of U.S. cigarette paper manufacturer Schweitzer-Mauduit were held by workers for more than three hours over redundancy plans. There have been several similar incidents in recent days and weeks, including at least three instances of workers threatening to blow up factories if their demands were not met.

French Industry Minister Christian Estrosi was to meet later on Wednesday with redundant workers from a construction equipment plant who placed gas canisters around their factory and threatened to blow it up if they didn’t get larger compensation from their main clients.

Five of the nine South African provinces experienced a complete shutdown of public hospitals on Tuesday as the doctors’ strike for a 50% wage increase intensified.

The striking doctors told reporters in a briefing in Johannesburg on Wednesday that public hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, the Western Cape, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and parts of Gauteng were completely shut down while those in the Free State, the North West and the Northern Cape operated with few doctors.

Lebogang Phahladira, spokesman for the South African Registrars’ Association, said doctors would fight until the government offered them a 50% wage increase. Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi last week announced an 18%- 60% increase for junior and senior doctors, which angered many doctors because the increase included incentives such as housing, car, scarce skills, overtime and car allowances.

Phahladira said on Tuesday that the doctors were prepared to fight until “their hands are broken”. He said South Africa’s medical fraternity was burning with anger and frustration. After intensive negotiations that lasted until the early hours of Wednesday, the Public Health and Social Development Sectoral Bargaining Council, which covers all health professionals at a national level, said the employer had presented its final offer to health professionals.

A media release from the council said the employees would now consider the offer. Phophi Ramathuba, spokeswoman for the South African Medical Association said the offer would be discussed thoroughly. She said there were some changes to the offer presented last week by the government. “This new offer is divided into levels and phases — to be adjusted every year,” she said. She urged all striking doctors to return to work.

Department of Health spokesman Fidel Hadebe said the department would issue a statement later on Wednesday regarding the “alleged” dismissal letters given to certain striking doctors.

A fire broke out Wednesday in the Executive Office Building in the White House compound, but Washington fire fighters quickly had the blaze under control.

Smoke billowed from the historic building as emergency crews rushed to the scene. Fire fighters broke windows, moved furniture to a balcony and sprayed water as they fought the blaze.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino says the source of the fire may have been an electrical closet or telephone bank. She says the blaze was put out in 30 minutes.

The Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which houses White House staff, was evacuated.

The fire started in the suite of ceremonial offices of Vice President Dick Cheney. A White House spokesman said the vice president was across the way in the White House with President Bush at the time of the fire.

President Bush and Vice President Cheney later greeted fire fighters and Secret Service personnel on the scene.
