Tanzania to Register Mobile Phone Numbers to Curb Crime

Tanzania’s deputy communications, science and technology minister, Maua Daftari, on Tuesday told the on-going National Assembly session the in the central administrative capital of Dodoma, that the country from this year will start to register all mobile phones numbers with the purpose of curbing crime.
She said, “apart from the many benefits mobile phone services have brought in Tanzania, the same mobile phones, if not used properly, can contribute to crime and theft.”
She said on behalf of the government of Tanzania, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), will work out modalities for taking and keeping records of all mobile phone numbers in the country.
Under the new system, all new mobile phones subscribers would now be required to produce official identification when buying new SIM cards, she said.
Daftari was speaking during a questions and answers session in parliament.
