Tanzania Troops in Comoros Begin Heading Home

April 21, 2008

The first batch of hundreds of Tanzanian troops dispatched to the Comoros Islands last month to flush out a rebel insurgency is expected to begin returning home Sunday, sources said here.

A statement issued Sunday by the spokesman of the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF), Brig. Gen. Samwel Ndomba, said the troops will be welcomed back home by the Minister for Defence and National Service, Dr Hussein Mwinyi.

In a recent monthly national address, President Jakaya Kikwete declared that the military operation to oust Bacar was designed to save the Comoros Islands from disintegration.

President Kikwete said the Tanzanian troops would return in two batches, the first batch on Sunday and the second to remain in Anjouan until after elections shortly.
