Tanzanian President Commended for Firing Corrupt Official

January 11, 2008

The United States and British governments Friday commended Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete for his bold decision to dismiss Bank of Tanzania’s governor, Daudi Ballali, for alleged corruption, and for promptly ordering an investigation to find all those responsible for multi-million dollar fraudulent transactions in repayment of the country’s external debts.

According to US ambassador Mark Green and British counterpart, Philip Parham, the decision to fire Ballali was vital for the confidence of development partners and investors.

“Bringing all the responsible parties to justice will help create greater transparency and increase international confidence in Tanzania’s investment climate,” said Green.

According to him, the most critical area where Tanzania needs to see continued progress is in battle against corruption in the country.

On Thursday President Kikwete fired Ballali and appointed his deputy, Benno Ndulu, to the post, following the report of an international audit company over allegations of misappropriation of US$133 million at the central bank.
