March 5, 2008
The Sri Lanka Ministry of Education claimed that the ’sick note campaign’ conducted by some teachers’ unions yesterday (04) was a failure, adding that a majority of teachers and principals had reported to work.
Yesterday some teachers’ unions conducted a ’sick note campaign’ aiming to gain political mileage from the long-standing grievances of teachers and principals.
Meanwhile a survey carried out yesterday has confirmed that there were no obstructions to school education despite action by three teacher unions with regard to salary anomalies. Reporters from many areas indicate that attendance in certain schools by teachers was high.
About 10 percent of teachers of certain schools were absent due to the trade union action. However the Education Ministry said that the absentee figure did not surpass the figure of the number of teachers who go on an average day.
Attendance of school children was also reported to be high.
Minister Susil Premajayanth had expressed his gratitude to principals and teachers who reported to work yesterday at the request of the Education Ministry and also for the dedicated services rendered by teachers and principal unions towards education.
