March 21, 2008
Takeshi Kamigouchi, Chairman of the Japan Tea Association and President of Unilever Japan KK at the annual get-together networking reception held recently in Tokyo between the tea trade members of Sri Lanka and Japan, pledged to maintain their strong support for Pure Ceylon Tea which he termed as top quality.
Sri Lanka currently dominates the Japanese black tea market with a 65% share. Kamigouchi assured that he would encourage junior tea instructors from Japan to visit Sri Lanka for their tea educational tour.
The Japan Tea Association annually passes out around 50-60 new junior tea instructors and a majority of them prefer to visit Sri Lanka for their training.
This important gathering and dinner reception was organized by the Tea Promotion Unit of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Japan to felicitate the Sri Lanka Tea companies which came to participate at the FOODEX 2008 exhibition and to recognize the support extended by Japanese Tea Trade.
The FOODEX Trade Exhibition held for the 34th occasion is considered as the largest annual exposition for food and beverages in the Asia-Pacific Region where buyers and sellers from 65 countries interact with each other. The exhibition consisted of 2412 exhibitors and 3255 booth holders where tea and wine are always identified as popular products.
Despite going through a difficult year, the Sri Lanka tea trade over came all obstacles to achieve a historical landmark when the revenue of the industry surpassed one billion dollars. Japan contributed strongly to this achievement by emerging as the sixth largest buyer of Ceylon Tea in quantity terms and the fifth largest buyer in value terms.
The Ceylon tea market share which was around 43 percent 5 years back has shot up to 65 percent by the year 2007 in the black tea segment of Japan.
The Chairman of Japan Tea Association recognized the Tea Promotion Unit of the Embassy of Sri Lanka which is working very closely with their Association being a major contributory factor for the superlative performance of the Sri Lanka tea trade.
The contingent from the Sri Lanka tea trade to the FOODEX 2008 Exhibition in Japan was the largest ever where the national pavilion consisted of 20 booths. The registered number of trade visitors to this year’s exhibition was reported to be approx. 97,000 during the 4 days period.
The Sri Lanka tea companies displayed a wide range of packaging which received commendation from the Japanese buyers and distributors. It was reported that over 15,000 cups of Pure Ceylon liquid tea was sampled by the visitors.
The Tea Promotion Unit of the Embassy of Sri Lanka had also organized a very popular tea seminar/presentation during the exhibition where close to 100 tea connoisseurs participated.
These professionals had the opportunity of sampling teas from different agro climatic districts of Sri Lanka where Diversity in Specialty of Ceylon Tea was emphasized to the Japanese society.
During the opening day of the FOODEX 2008 exhibition, the Tea Promotion Unit of the Embassy of Sri Lanka had organized to formally declare open the Sri Lanka pavilion which was designed and beautifully decorated and attracted many buyers as well as potential customers.
