Thousands of Families Living in Unsafe Houses After July 10 Explosion in the Kagan Arms Depot

July 28, 2008

Seven thousand families living in homes damaged by the July 10 explosions at an arms depot in Kagan are now in danger, the Uzbekistan Human Rights Alliance reports.

The explosions in Kagan could be felt eight miles away in Bukhara, the regional and popular tourism center. Blast waves blew off roofs in Kagan and created cracks in walls that could collapse any time.

The Bukhara regional administration has ordered the demolition of damaged houses and the distribution of land on cotton fields to all who lost their homes. However, local residents say they received nothing apart from the land. Having lost almost everything in the devastating incident, residents of Kagan reportedly do not have the funds to build their own homes.

Many residents remain dissatisfied with the way the local administration wants to deal with owners of damaged houses and have sought to appeal for compensation to buy construction materials for new homes.

However, some have already given up the idea due to alleged intimidation. Unidentified persons have been reported to visit victims of the blast and tell residents that, if they complain, they will not be given even a strip of land, according to the Human Rights Alliance.
