Ethiopian tourism agencies have applied to participate in the international tourism and trade fair scheduled for later this month, from March 17 – 20, in Moscow and use the opportunity to discuss about future business cooperation and prospects with their Russian partners.
Over the past few years, Ethiopian tourism agencies together with the Ethiopian embassy in Moscow have stepped up efforts to win the hearts of Russians whose incomes have grown significantly and are in search of Africa’s exotic destinations.
Mr. Amha Hailegeorgis of the Ethiopian embassy told APA that “the flow of Russian tourists to Ethiopia has been increasing steadily due to relentless efforts to popularize the country’s spots through the local media in Russia.”
“Ethiopia is a country of numerous interesting and wonderful tourists’ attractions. The uncommon combination of historical, cultural, and natural attractions that marks Ethiopia as a unique tourist destination in Africa is an exciting and unexpected surprise for many tourists,” he said.
Out of Ethiopia’s enormous attractions, eight have been declared as world heritage sites by UNESCO. These are the ancient city of Aksum, the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, the Gonder Royal Castles, the wall city of Harar (Jegoal), the Cradle of Mankind Lucy (fossil), 3.5 million years old, Tiya Stelae, Omo Valley palethological site, the Semen Mountains National Park, which is a marvelous site having Walia Ibex, Semien Red Fox, and Gelada Baboon which all are endemic to Ethiopia.
Ethiopia, unlike other African countries has 3000 years of history full of monasteries, royal palaces, rock-hewn churches, the origin of coffee and very ancient mosques, many national parks having endemic animals and birds, amazing landscape, many lakes and rivers, cultural diversity of 85 ethnic groups and more than 200 dialects.
“Seeing is believing, exploring these impressive attractions one should not miss them in ones’ lifetime because they are the gift to the world,” Kidane H. Mariam, managing director of EmpireTour Ethiopia, told APA from Addis Ababa in an email note.
She added that “Ethiopia has a rich natural and cultural heritage to offer to the world because it is one of the world’s most ancient civilizations as well as a breath taking range of landscapes and natural riches. It is a cradle of mankind ; Lucy the skeletal remains that lived 3.2 million years ago. It is also a source of the Nile and one of the oldest homes of Christianity.”
