Truck Carrying Microchips Worth Over $100,000 Hijacked in Malaysia
December 20, 2007
Three men armed with machetes hijacked a truck laden with microchips worth more than RM500,000 at the Rawang Rest and Service Area of the North-South Expressway at dawn today, Bernama reported.
The incident occurred at about 5.30am after the truck driver had stopped at the rest area off the north-bound lane to ease himself, said Gombak acting police chief Supt Abu Karim Hasan. As the driver came out of the toilet, he was confronted by three men armed with machetes who had come in a four-wheel-drive vehicle, he said. He said two of the men “escorted” the driver to the truck while the third acted as a lookout.
“They then bundled the driver into the truck and drove it for five kilometers before leaving him by the road side. The driver was unharmed,” Abdul Karim said when contacted. He said the 30-year-old driver, who was sending the consignment to an electronics factory in Ipoh, walked one kilometre to a police station to lodge a report. Abdul Karim said police were investigating whether the hijack involved an inside job as the suspects knew when the truck was dispatching the goods.
“We have contacted the truck company and will be taking a statement from them. We are also tracing the identity of the suspects from the CCTV footage at the rest area. Police have mounted roadblocks,” he said.
