Voters in Tunisia started voting Sunday morning to elect their new president and 214 MPs, for the next five years.
Three opposition candidates, Ahmed Brahim Ettajdid (former communist), Mohamed Bouchiha (Popular Unity Party,) and Ahmed Inoubli (Unionist Democratic Union), will try to defeat 73-year old Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, who has been ruling the country since 1987.
President Ben Ali’s party, the Democratic Constitutional Rally (RCD,) has conducted a brisk election campaign throughout the country.
A national institute led by Abdelwahab Behi, the former President of the bar, and including journalists, magistrates, academics, etc. is supervising the election.
The African Union (AU) and regional observers from the Maghreb are also monitoring the vote.
