Twelve Al-Qaeda Related Terrorist Groups Eliminated in Xinjiang
July 17, 2008
Kashgar police from the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in northwest China have broken up 12 terrorist groups since January this year, RIA Novosti reports.
Most of the groups were divisions of the East Turkestan, which is suspected of having ties with Al-Qaeda and committing a series of terrorist attacks in China.
Xinjiang borders five countries, including turbulent Afghanistan and Pakistan, which makes the area more prone to terrorism than other parts of China.
Forty militant bases have also been destroyed in Urumchi, the Xinjiang administrative center, and 80 people apprehended in terrorism-related arrests.
On July 9, one group put up resistance while being detained by police. Five members of the group were killed and those arrested later admitted their intentions to wage a jihad against the Qin, who constitute 92 percent of China’s population.
