Twelve Congolese have been arrested by police for fishing illegally in Lake Albert on the Uganda side of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The resident deputy commissioner for Bushenyi district west of Kampala, Nickson Kabuye said on Wednesday the illegal fishing has started to cause conflicts in the lake between Congolese and Ugandan fishermen.
He said sometimes the Congolese want to drown the Ugandan fish mongers into the lake.
“These people are disturbing our civilians and yet they enter Uganda territory illegally,” he said.
The district police commander, Jimmy Oyuku said the Congolese were arrested with over 10 boats, five motorized engine boats and over 300 fish.
“They had over stayed long on Uganda waters denying the Ugandans from accessing the waters,” he said.
He identified the fishermen as Kambale M, Kakule V, Baluku N, Kambale W, Kambare K, Kasereki Mumbere, Kasere, Kambare K, Tembo, Kambare Kasukwera and Kirisiya.
Uganda and Congo have in the past clashed over Rukwanzi island in Lake Albert, which is believed to mark the boundary between the two countries.
