May 21, 2008
Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) is holding a Congolese man suspected of recruiting people in western Uganda for the ANC rebel outfit headed by General Laurent Nkunda operating in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
UPDF second division spokesperson Captain Kiconco Tabaaro disclosed on Tuesday that Lieutenant John Nganizi has been recruiting especially youths from Mbarara municipality, 300 kilometers west of Kampala city, by deceiving them that he would get them jobs in the DRC.
He said Nganizi was netted by security at a petrol station with six locals and a loaded mobile phone set with suspicious contacts. He was also carrying money to use in transporting the recruits to the Congo.
Tabaaro said the suspect will be handed over to the Congolese government for action.
He cautioned the public to be on the alert for any suspicious people.
In a related development, tension has been growing high in the south-western Uganda border town of Kisoro where a strange helicopter suspected to be supplying information and arms to Laurent Nkunda’s rebel group has been hovering over and landing.
Local authorities suspect the helicopter could be from Rwanda surveying the FDLR Interahamwe activities and countering them through Nkunda’s ANC movement.
