The Chief Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone which is trying former Liberian President Charles Taylor on eleven counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity said that the United Nations has discovered and frozen $6 million of Taylor’s wealth.
In an interview with a Liberian journalist covering the trial in The Hague and published in Liberian dailies on Thursday, Mr. Stephen Rapp said the tracing exercise for the hidden wealth of former President Taylor continues in international circles, saying the court would like to see ten times that amount frozen.
“Whatever is discovered of Mr. Taylor’s wealth would go towards compensating victims of the Sierra Leonean and Liberian conflicts,†he added.
Mr. Taylor has maintained that he is broke, and has challenged the international community to trace and identify any money belonging him.
