The United States government will collaborate with UNICEF and Nigeria to forestall a recurrence of the recent outbreak of lead contamination in Zamfara, North West of Nigeria, the U.S. Embassy said in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.
In a statement, the U.S Mission said the partnership would be in the area of awareness campaign aimed at educating miners and mining communities on the dangers of unsafe gold mining methods.
More than 100 children had died since March following reported cases of lead poisoning in two local government areas in Zamfara.
The embassy’s statement continued that health workers, community groups and the media will be engaged on ways to guard against hazards associated with lead contamination.
“The 80,000 dollars contribution from the U.S. Government through its Agency for International Development (USAID) comes in the wake of immediate emergency medical assistance provided by the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF,’’ it stated.
According to the statement, the Mines and Steel Development Ministry will oversee the partnership.
