125px-Flag_of_the_United_Nations.svg3The United Nations will in December honor an outstanding Zimbabwean organization or individual who has excelled in voluntary community work during 2009 with an award.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said the winner of the Zimbabwe National Volunteer Award would be revealed during a ceremony to commemorate the 2009 International Volunteer Day on 5 December.

Entries for the award would close on 16 November, according to the UN agency.

The winning volunteer should have displayed outstanding and unique volunteering qualities within a specific community or field during the period from January 2009 to date.

The recipient must be an individual or organization involved in activities ranging from community and home-based care, orphans and vulnerable children, environment and gender and women’s empowerment to people with disabilities, youths, treatment, care and support and other areas where volunteerism is involved.

The Zimbabwean theme for the 2009 celebrations is “Volunteering for Our Planet : Rebuilding Zimbabwe.”
