United States Envoy Urges National Unity in Tanzania, Zanzibar

July 7, 2008

US Ambassador to Tanzania Mark Green on Sunday, urged Zanzibar’s two feuding parties to put aside personal interests and come back to the negotiation table.

Speaking at the celebration of the 232nd anniversary of the US declaration of independence at the US embassy in Dar es Salaam, Mr Green said the two parties the opposition Civic United Front (CUF) and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) must both be fairly represented in the government for the betterment of the islands on the whole.

’’Zanzibar has so much to give Tanzania and the world,’’ Mr Green said. ’’With successful reconciliation there is no telling how high those beautiful islands can reach.’’

CUF, which has been locked in a stalemate with CCM over the stalled Mwafaka talks, recently reiterated its appeal to President Jakaya Kikwete to personally intervene and help resolve the political impasse.
