US Army in Uganda to Vaccinate Domestic Animals
January 30, 2008
United States soldiers are in Uganda to help in the vaccination of 25,000 domestic animals in Gulu and Amuru districts north of Kampala. Lt. Col. Jeffrey Swan of the US Combined Joint Taskforce said on Wednesday that the vaccination is being conducted at the request of district leaders and the government.
He said a team of veterinary doctors will immunize cattle, dogs, pigs, sheep, cats and poultry against major infectious diseases that affect domestic animals in the region.
James Okwir, the Amuru district veterinary officer, said in an interview that the intervention will save the district from losing animals to preventable diseases.
He said many farmers have lost their livestock because they cannot afford drugs for their animals.
Okwir is however worried that the farmers will not be able to sustain the animal health guaranteed by the vaccination campaign.
