U.S. Government Donates Nuclear Radiation Detection Equipment to Nigeria

The United States government has donated nuclear radiation detection equipment to Nigeria for the safe use of radioactive nuclear materials.

United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Robin Renee Sanders while handing over the equipment, Tuesday, in Abuja said, “In this regard, the people and government of the United States, through the US Mission in Nigeria are pleased to partner with Nigeria to assist the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority and other concerned agencies, in building the necessary professional and institutional capacity to ensure that radioactive nuclear materials are used safely.

Ambassador Sanders expressed the hope that the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority would take full advantage of the skills, knowledge and experience given to them. She said the project had benefited 23 countries.

The Director General of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, (NNRA), Professor Elegba said with the assistance of the US government, the Authority would vigorously pursue its strategic partnership with the various security organizations in the area of training and sharing of information.

He pleaded for assistance in ridding Nigeria of what he described as “orphan radioactive sources”.
