US War Students in on a Study Visit to Rwanda
March 9, 2008
A team of United States war college students is in Rwanda for a tour of this tiny country once a killing field during the 1994 genocide of a million Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
Accompanied by their three professors, the fourteen students from the US Air War College arrived in Rwanda on Friday, and are continuing with their four-day study tour.
According to the Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) spokesperson, Major Jill Rutaremara, the visit of the US war students is aimed at giving them first hand lessons of a country once plagued by war, but has made some significant transformations.
During their stay, the group, led by Colonel James Smith is to meet with different government officials including the President’s Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region, Dr Richard Sezibera, RDF senior officers and the Rwanda Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) officials, according to Rutaremara.
He said the team will also be briefed on regional security and also visit various tourist sites around the country.
The visit of these war college students comes in the footsteps of United States President George Bush’s visit to Kigali.
The first time Rwanda is hosting students from such a powerful US military college. Most previous military students’ study tours in Rwanda were coming from other parts of the world.
