Virgin Atlantic Airline Boss to Help Market Kenyan Tourism
May 20, 2008
The President of the Virgin Atlantic Airlines based in Britain, Richard Branson on Monday said that he will help Kenya market itself as a top tourist destination in Africa in the international market following the post-election skirmishes sparked by last year’s disputed presidential elections that severely dented the country’s tourism industry.
Speaking to journalists in Nairobi, Branson said that his airline will aggressively market Kenya as a top tourist destination in Africa in a marketing campaign mostly in Britain and other western countries.
Branson refuted reports that his airline company will pull its services out of the country due to the heavy losses the company incurred after many Western countries, notably the United States and the United Kingdom slapped travel advisory on the country advising its citizens from visiting the country at the height of the violence in January and February.
The tourism industry, the second foreign exchange earner after the horticulture sector lost 5 billion shillings ($80 million) due to the violence.
Already, the Kenyan government has earmarked over 1 billion shillings ($16 million) to market the country in the international market.
