Malawi has started registering voters for the April 2011 Local Government Elections, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) spokesperson Richard Mveriwa said.
Richard Mveriwa told APA in Lilongwe the capital that the exercise will be carried out in phases as was the case in previous elections.
“This is being done due to shortage of electoral materials which included the registration materials,” he said.
The MEC spokesperson pointed out that the exercise will currently use the same equipment used during the Presidential and Parliamentary elections while waiting for those purchased in South Africa.
He said the first phase which will last for three days will start in Neno, Mwanza and Chikhwawa districts while the second phase will be in Mulanje, Thyolo and Phalombe all in the southern part of the country.
Mveriwa added that voters that have voter certificates used during the 2009 general elections will only require to verify their names while those who lost their will be required to replace them.
He therefore appealed to eligible voters to participate in the process to enable them vote during coming elections.
