Preliminary Results of Liberian National Census Released
June 21, 2008
Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Friday announced preliminary results of the March 2008 national census, putting the current population of Liberia at about 3.4 million.
Announcing the results in Monrovia, President Sirleaf said this figure represents a 2.1 percent growth rate over the past 24 years.
She said even though the figure is not final, it can be used for national planning purposes because it will not change significantly when the final result is released.
The Director-General of the Liberia Statistics and Geo-information Services (LISGIS) which organized the census, Dr. Edward Liberty said Montserrado County which hosts the capital Monrovia, tops with 1.1million, while Grand Kru County in the south-east has the lowest population with about 57,106.
Dr. Liberty said the final results will be released after the post-enumeration survey is completed.
The last national population census held in 1984 put the population at 2.5 million.
