Wholesale Commodity Prices Ease in East Africa
July 23, 2008
Wholesale food prices in the Uganda capital Kampala have started to fall beginning early July as early harvesting starts, according to statistics from the Regional Agricultural Trade Intelligence Network (RATIN).
Wholesale maize and bean prices have also started to drop in the Tanzania capital Dar es Salaam as a result of the ongoing harvesting in most of the growing areas in the country.
Dar es Salaam maize prices during June dropped by about 12% compared to January 2008, according to RATIN.
Information from the border Kenya town of Busia indicates that maize supplies have increased despite the low demand, putting downward pressure on maize prices.
The wholesale maize and bean prices declined in Busia in July compared to June, with maize prices declining to $308 per metric ton from $400 while bean prices declined to $785 from $846 during the same period.
In Kenya and Rwanda there has been no relief on commodity prices, with maize prices in Nairobi continuing to rise.
The price for maize in Nairobi, Kampala, Dar es Salaam and Kigali are $327, $353, $241 and $378 per metric ton respectively.
