Eve of Wisconsin And Hawaii Primaries

February 18, 2008

U.S. presidential primary contests continue later Tuesday with both Democrats and Republicans holding primaries in Wisconsin and the Democrats holding a caucus in Hawaii.
Democratic Senator Barack Obama hopes to continue his winning streak over Senator Hillary Clinton. Polls show the two candidates in a close race in Wisconsin.

On Monday, Clinton supporters criticized Obama for using someone else’s lines in a speech without acknowledging their source.

Obama said he should have credited his friend, Massachussets Governor Deval Patrick, who had given him permission to use the lines.

In Texas, former U.S. President George H.W. Bush, the father of the current president, endorsed Republican Senator John McCain for president, saying no one is better prepared to lead the nation as the next chief executive.

McCain said the endorsement is an honor and helps the Republican Party unite and move forward.

The veteran Arizona lawmaker, who is the leading Republican presidential candidate, is hoping to win over some of his conservative critics, who feel he is out of step with their views on issues such as immigration, tax policy and campaign reform.

McCain won the endorsement last week of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who had dropped out of the race for the party’s nomination.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
