UN Body Predicts Food Crisis in Zambia Due to Heavy Rains
February 22, 2008
The UN World Food Program (WFP) on Friday predicted that there would be a serious food crisis in Zambian and other countries in the Southern Africa region due to the adverse weather that the area is currently undergoing.
The weather has seriously comprised food security in the region, with the heavy rains that have resulted in serious floods in many regions.
The floods have therefore destroyed most crops which have been washed away, with no hope of recovery, the UN agency said.
The WFP has been mobilizing food supplies for stricken communities in most parts of the country.
The organization, however, said despite its efforts to acquire surplus supplies of maize grain from the previous farming season, there would still be a shortfall as most communities affected by the floods had lost entire fields of crops.
