Zambia Government Probes Cases of Abandoned Zambian Women in Mali

July 29, 2008

Zambian Foreign Minister Kabinga Pande has appealed to the Malian government to assist in establishing how many Zambian women and children are stranded in Mali after being disowned by their spouses and their relatives.

Pande said this Monday when he handed Diplomatic Exequaturs to consul-designate of the Republic of Mali, Mamadou Kouyate, and his counterpart from Mauritius, Rekha Parmer, in the capital Lusaka.

Pande said he was aware that a number of Zambian women who got married to Malians and relocated to the West African country had been disowned and were stranded there.

“There are a number of Zambian women stranded in Mali and we would like you to assist us by providing us with statistics of how many women and children are stranded and want to return home, so that we can facilitate their journey back.

“We have previously been pursuing this matter through our office in Nigeria, and when a special envoy from Mali visited us early this year, we brought this issue to his attention,” he said.

Pande said Zambia and Mali had enjoyed friendly relations from the time of independence in the early sixties, and the two countries shared a lot of common interests through common membership to the African Union and the United Nations.
