Zambian Families Take Shelter in Church Building

March 25, 2008

At least 35 families in Zambia’s Mumbwa District, west of the capital Lusaka, are sheltering in a Catholic Church building after their homes were washed away by heavy rains in the area.

District officials confirmed on Monday that the families have been forced to take accommodation in the building of worship after the heavy rains washed away their homes close to the holy facility.

The church, however, was not conducive to accommodating a large group of people as it does not have the required facilities to house them, the officials said, adding that the children of the affected families have now stopped from going to school after their property was lost in the running waters.

Mumbwa District is one of the hardest hit areas of the country by heavy rains, causing flooding that has left a trail of destruction.

Some 1,000 families from the same area were recently asked by government to relocate to higher grounds as the area they are currently living in has habitually become prone to submergence.

The officials have expressed hope that the rains will begin to recede as the rainy season is nearly over and this would enable it to carry out humanitarian work more effectively.
