The Zambian government will ensure that all street vendors are removed from streets in the capital Lusaka and allocated stalls in the markets to conduct their trade, Deputy Minister for Local Government and Housing Moses Muteteka said on Friday.
He said it was worrying that the petty traders have begun flocking back to the streets despite having been removed last year.
He admitted that a shortage of market spaces was one reason why the traders kept returning to the streets.
But the government would continue with its program to construct more markets in the capital city and in other parts of the country to prevent street vendors from invading the streets.
The Lusaka City Council last year solicited the help of police, forcefully removing the street vendors from the streets.
However, barely three months later, the street vendors have begun returning to the streets.
Muteteka observed that a shortage of market stalls was not an excuse for vendors to defy a government directive and return to the streets.
