Zambia’s opposition Patriotic Front (PF) has rejected a government decision to send auditors to three of the country’s biggest city councils, alleging financial mismanagement exists these three bodies.
The PF control’s the country’s three main city councils of Lusaka, Kitwe and Ndola, but the government said it would send auditors to the three city councils soon to examine their financial books.
This is part of the ongoing spat between the opposition and the government over who is to blame for poor service deliveries in the three cities.
Lusaka has been hit by major flooding following heavy rains, leaving at least eight people dead.
In Kitwe and Ndola, the government has alleged that the poor state of roads and other infrastructure was a result of abuse of grants given to the council, an assertion that has been rejected by the PF.
PF leader Michael Sata said the PF would only accept to have its city councils audited if the government ordered a nationwide audit that would also cover city councils controlled by the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy.
Although the city councils of Lusaka, Kitwe and Ndola are in hands of the opposition, funding for service provision is allocated from the national budget.
The PF have said their city councils have been unable to provide services to acceptable standards because the central government has only been partially releasing requested funds and this has affected good service delivery.
