ZANU PF Supporters Killed in Political Violence in Zimbabwe

June 11, 2008

Zimbabwe police have reported two more deaths of the ruling ZANU PF party supporters in suspected violent cases as the political temperature heats up ahead of a presidential run-off poll set for June 27, APA learned on Wednesday.

National police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena said that the two ZANU PF supporters were killed in the eastern Manicaland province by suspected members of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) of Morgan Tsvangirai.

Five MDC supporters have been arrested in connection with the Manicaland murders that occurred on Monday, the spokesman said.

“We are carrying out further investigations,” Bvudzijena said.

The deaths bring to four the number of ruling party supporters allegedly murdered by MDC militias in the ongoing political violence that has preceded the run-off between President Robert Mugabe and Tsvangirai.

Two other ZANU PF supporters had earlier been reported murdered last week in the southeastern Masvingo province.

Political violence has erupted since the first round of elections on March 29 in which Tsvangirai beat Mugabe by a narrow margin.

The MDC has also claimed that more than 60 of its supporters have been murdered by ZANU PF militias in the past two months, while hundreds others have been displaced from their homes in the countryside.
