A Zimbabwean court has acquitted a South African media house accused of providing broadcasting services in the country without a license after throwing out a prosecution request on Thursday to postpone the case.

Harare magistrate Archie Wochiunga dismissed the application for postponement after a state witness failed to turn up for the trial.

The magistrate removed the South African firm from remand, effectively acquitting the company.

Globecast Satellite was accused of contravening sections of Broadcasting Services Act which outlaw the provision of broadcasting services or operating a signal carrier without a license.

The case against Globecast stemmed from the broadcast of an interview by American television network, Cable News Network, of Zimbabwe’s minister of information, Sikhanyiso Ndlovu, on March 27.

Globecast Satellite is accused of providing the satellite uplink used to beam the interview without a license.
