Zimbabwe Court Fails to Release Jailed Labor Leaders
May 15, 2008
A Zimbabwe court has remanded in jail two leaders of the country’s main trade union federation who are facing charges of inciting public violence, APA learned on Wednesday.
Harare magistrate Olivia Mariga refused to release Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Lovemore Matombo and secretary general Wellington Chibebe arrested last week following utterances they made during an event to mark Workers Day on May 1.
The ZCTU leaders are alleged to have incited violence against President Robert Mugabe’s government and its supporters during their address to workers in Harare.
The court denied the trade unionists bail on the grounds that they could abscond. They will appear in court again on May 23.
