Zimbabwe Editor Arrested Over Editorial Critical of President Mugabe

May 9, 2008

The editor of a Zimbabwean weekly was arrested Thursday as a government crackdown on the media continued, reliable sources said. Davison Maruziva, editor of the privately owned The Standard, was picked up by police at his office in the capital, Harare, reportedly over an opinion piece that appeared in the weekly’s edition of April 20.

According to his deputy, Bill Saidi, police officers from the Law and Order Section, picked up Maruziva in the morning for question at Harare Central Police Station.

He was accompanied to the police station by the chief executive of ZimInd Publishers, Raphael Khumalo.

ZimInd Publishers also publishes the weekly Zimbabwe Independent.

The opinion piece in question was written by Arthur Mutambara, leader of the smaller faction of the main opposition party, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

The article, which appeared under the headline “A shameful betrayal of national Independence”, highlighted some of the shortcomings of President Robert Mugabe’s reign over Zimbabwe since independence in 1980.
