Zimbabwe Government Dismisses Claims of Plot to Assassinate Opposition Leader
May 18, 2008
The Zimbabwe government has dismissed as “cheap politics” claims by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) that it has unearthed an assassination plot against its leader, Morgan Tsvangirai.
Tsvangirai did not return to Zimbabwe on Saturday as earlier promised after the MDC said it had been informed of an assassination plot against the opposition leader. Tsvangirai’s spokesman, George Sibotshiwe told the international media Saturday that his party was assessing a report on the assassination plot received from a “credible source” before the MDC leader could return.
The Zimbabwe government dismissed the claim as baseless and frivolous and accused the MDC of seeking to gain cheap political mileage by making unsubstantiated allegations.
“The people of Zimbabwe should not take such statements seriously,” a government spokesman said.
Tsvangirai has not returned to Zimbabwe since early April when he fled from the country citing security fears following an impasse over presidential election results.
The security situation in the country has since worsened after political violence erupted between MDC supporters and pro-government militias.
