Lawmakers from Southern Africa are meeting in Zimbabwe’s resort town of Victoria Falls for the 26th Plenary Assembly of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Forum amid calls to transform the forum into a regional legislature.
Delegates to the week-long conference are considering a proposal to model the SADC-PF along the lines of the Pan African Parliament which meets twice a year in South Africa to deliberate on continental issues.
The conference is being attended by lawmakers from all the 15 SADC member states and seeks to chart the way forward for the forum whose mandate also includes sending monitors to observe elections in the region.
The meeting will be officially opened by Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe on Wednesday.
