Zimbabwe Labor Leaders Freed on Bail
May 20, 2008
The Zimbabwean High Court judge, Ben Hlatshwayo, has granted bail Monday to two labor leaders facing charges of inciting public violence, APA learned on Tuesday.
The lawyer of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), Aleck Muchadehama, said judge Hlatshwayo ruled in favor of a bail application by ZCTU president Lovemore Matombo and his secretary general Wellington Chibebe.
As a condition for granting the bail application, the judge ordered the men not to address political gatherings until their court case is finalized.
Matombo and Chibebe are facing charges of inciting an uprising against President Robert Mugabe’s government.
The charges arise from an address they made during Workers Day commemorations in the capital, Harare.
They will appear in court on Friday May 23 for the continuation of their case.
