Zimbabwe Opposition Hails Nelson Mandela’s Stance on Freedom
July 21, 2008
Zimbabwe’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has vowed to draw inspiration from Nelson Mandela in its struggle for the establishment of democracy in the crisis-stricken country, MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai said Monday.
“As Mandela sagely advised years ago, the road to freedom is long and requires great sacrifices,” Tsvangirai said, adding that, “We shall not give up. We shall not waiver now. The will of the people shall prevail.”
Zimbabwe is currently facing a political impasse with President Robert Mugabe who controversially won the one-candidate presidential election run-off on June 27.
“Mugabe is an illegitimate president,” said Tsvangirai, who pulled out of the run-off race citing State-sponsored terror campaign against MDC supporters.
Tsvangirai lauded Mandela for having publicly condemned the Mugabe regime.
“As a result of your (Madiba’s) brave spirit and peaceful heroism, the international community knows now more than ever that Zimbabwe’s leadership crisis has hit new depths of shame,” he said.
Madiba, who is retired from active politics and rarely makes public pronouncements, recently denounced the “tragic leadership” in Zimbabwe.
