Zimbabwe’s opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, on Wednesday urged South African President Kgalema Motlanthe to arrange and mediate a confidential meeting between himself and Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe in an effort to solve the long-stalled power-sharing agreement signed in September 2008.
The request to Motlanthe from Tsvangirai, leader of the main faction of the Movement for Democratic Change, apparently underscored his continued lack of confidence in the mediation of former president Thabo Mbeki.
Tsvangirai is due to start a high-level meeting with senior executives of his party in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Tsvangirai wrote that he wanted renewed talks on the power-sharing deal but underscored that such talks should be under the chairmanship of Motlanthe.
